Signs My Car’s Water Pump Is Bad

You need not worry if your car’s water pump has gone bad. We can replace the water pump with a new one to restore the circulation of the coolant throughout the engine. Generally, the water pump needs to be replaced every 10 years or 100,000 miles. If you are having any of the problems discussed below, bring your vehicle to our auto repair shop so we can install a new water pump.

Rusted Water Pump

Pop the hood and inspect the water pump carefully. Look for rust or corrosion on the outside of the pump. If you see rust or corrosion, the water pump has a slow leak. Unfortunately, this leak cannot be repaired. Rather, the water pump needs to be replaced. If you ignore the problem, the rust and corrosion will eat through the water pump and cause a much larger coolant leak.

Leaking Engine Coolant

This may leave you with spots or puddles on the garage floor one day when you back your automobile out of the garage. If you see spots or puddles, cut the engine and take a good look at the fluid to determine its color. If the fluid on the garage floor matches the color of your engine coolant, it’s probable that the rust has eaten through the water pump and it is leaking.

Poor Coolant Circulation

Unfortunately, the water pump can also start to malfunction, and this will affect your coolant circulation in the engine. The water pump is a pump that pushes the coolant through the engine to ensure it reaches every nook and cranny. When the water pump goes bad, it may fail to circulate the coolant through the engine. Consequently, your engine will be coolant-starved.

Grinding/Growling Sounds

You may also start to hear grinding or growling sounds coming from the front of the engine. This is a sign that the water pump is malfunctioning and wearing down. You will hear these noises every time that your engine is running because the water pump operates when the engine is running. We will need to replace the water pump with a new one to stop the growling sounds.

Constant Overheating

Finally, your engine could overheat constantly if you have any of the problems discussed above. Naturally, if the water pump is leaking coolant, the coolant level will be low. If the water pump cannot circulate the coolant, the engine will not have any coolant.

Give us a ring to set up an appointment so we can test your water pump and replace it if necessary. We will do our best to work with your schedule.
