Signs My Car’s Exhaust System Is Malfunctioning

Your car relies on the exhaust system to remove the exhaust from the combustion chamber. If the combustion chamber fills with exhaust, it will prevent the production of engine combustion. The exhaust system should be inspected once a year to make sure everything is in order. If you have not had your exhaust system inspected in years, you may end up with one or more of the following problems.

Loud Popping Noises

Loud popping noises when you first start your automobile are a sign that the exhaust manifold or gasket is leaking. This noise can actually go away once the engine heats up because the metal out of which the manifold is made will expand. This can temporarily seal any hole or crack.

Poor Engine Performance

As we mentioned above, the exhaust system removes the exhaust from the combustion chamber to keep the engine’s combustion going strong. If the exhaust system is clogged or leaking, the chamber may fill with exhaust and your engine’s performance will suffer.

Poor Fuel Economy

Anytime that the engine is performing poorly, it will use more fuel. Consequently, your exhaust system problem will cost you more money at the pump. We can inspect the exhaust system to find the clog or leak and repair the problem. This will restore your fuel efficiency.

Roaring Engine

A roaring engine can be a sign that you need a new muffler installed in the exhaust system. The muffler likely has a hole in it and this is why the exhaust noise is much louder. Unfortunately, a roaring engine can also be a sign that somebody took your catalytic converter.

Fuel Smells

A dangerous sign that your exhaust system is malfunctioning is fuel odors in the passenger cabin. These odors can make you sick, so we recommend that you pull over and have your automobile towed to our shop. Do not drive your vehicle if you can smell fuel or exhaust odors.

Hanging Tailpipe

Finally, you need a new tailpipe if your old one has been knocked loose and is hanging. The tailpipe can also corrode if you live in a humid climate. The corrosion can eat through the tailpipe and leave it with a hole in it. The tailpipe can also be damaged by road debris.

Call us today to schedule an appointment if it has been years since you have had the exhaust system inspected in your vehicle. We will check to make sure everything is okay.
